Alongside him are artists such as Ugo Valeri, James Ensor, Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Christian Rohlfs, and Alberto Martini, as well as Renato Guttuso, Marina Abramović, Shirin Neshat, Mike Nelson, and Brad Kahlhamer.

The successful programme of exhibitions conceived by the Fondazione Musei Civici for the Centro Culturale Candiani continues, having been renewed by the exhibition Kandinsky e le avanguardie in 2022, Chagall. Il colore di sogni in 2023 and Matisse e la luce del Mediterraneo in 2024. These exhibitions are based on the civic collections preserved in the Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna.
The new project starts from the graphic collections of Ca’ Pesaro, which contains four exemplary graphic works by Edvard Munch executed in drypoint, aquatint, etching and lithography. Inspired by the revolutionary iconographies of the Norwegian master, the exhibition investigates the work of this protagonist of Nordic Expressionism, the creator of iconic masterpieces in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The overwhelming intensity of forms and colours in Munch’s art reverberates all through the 20th century. This appears not just in the Scandinavian and German art added to the collections of Ca’ Pesaro through acquisitions by the Municipality of Venice during the editions of the Biennale, but also in the great season of the Weimar Republic between the wars.

The lesson of German and Nordic Expressionism appears in works at Ca’ Pesaro, such as those by Ugo Valeri, the masks of the Belgian James Ensor, and the scathing prints by Max Beckmann, of which Ca’ Pesaro preserves an outstanding core of 29 graphic works, part of the donation made by Paul Prast in 2022. Beckmann’s merciless depictions of human nature, brutal and ferocious, are flanked by the works of other masters such as Otto Dix, Christian Rohlfs, or even the Italian Alberto Martini, whose engravings probe human forms and figures.

Munch’s expressionist scream was perpetuated through the 20th century by the denunciatory works of Renato Guttuso and in the horrors of war depicted by the sensibility of various artists, who have brought modernity down to the present. Recent conflicts are depicted in Marina Abramovič and Shirin Neshat’s monumental figures and Mike Nelson and Brad Kahlhamer’s skulls, works donated in December 2022 by Gemma De Angelis Testa to the Municipality of Venice for Ca’ Pesaro.

From 13 September to 12 October 2025, the Centro Culturale Candiani in Mestre hosts the collective exhibition of Premio Mestre di Pittura 2025, organized by Il Circolo Veneto and Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, under the patronage of Regione del Veneto, Città Metropolitana di Venezia and Comune di Venezia, with the collaboration of Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia and Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. The exhibition will display the finalist works, selected by the prize jury.

The Premio Mestre di Pittura was founded in 1958 from the far-sighted idea of the artist Andreina Crepet Guazzo, who since the early 1950s had hoped for a cultural revival of the mainland, together with the economic recovery underway in those same years. After ten successful editions involving some of the most famous names in Venetian painting and beyond, the Prize was discontinued in 1968. It was revived in 2017, after more than half a century of oblivion, thanks to the energy and passion of the members of the Circolo Veneto. Since 2018 it has been organised in collaboration with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, a partner in the selection of the works, organisation of the exhibition and production of the catalogue.

Reflecting the link between the Prize and the Musei Civici, and as was the case in its original editions, even today each work that wins the Premio Mestre di Pittura becomes the property of the Municipality of Venice, being added to the collections of the Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna di Ca’ Pesaro.
Founded in partnership between the Municipality of Venice and important Venetian cultural institutions, such as the Accademia di Belle Arti Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, the prize is supported by a large group of generous patrons and private sponsors, with the purpose of promoting contemporary painting.

The Premio Mestre di Pittura 2025 is now in the ninth edition of its renewed series. Also in this edition the prize is open to all, without limits of age, gender, nationality, and on any subject. The jury of the Premio Mestre is made up of illustrious art historians and professionals in the cultural sector. This was already the case with the presidents of the jury in previous editions: Stefano Zecchi, Philippe Daverio and Gianfranco Maraniello.

Since 2021, the Lifetime Achievement Award has paid homage to an artist distinguished in the course of a long career, not only for artistic merits, but also as having close ties to the region. Finally, among the numerous initiatives related to the Premio Mestre and its long tradition, a path of remembrance of the winning artists of the historic editions has been initiated to honour their memory, starting with Ernani Costantini, winner of the first edition in 1958.

In 2019, on the initiative of the Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro, Artefici del nostro tempo (Creators of our time) was founded during the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. This is a competition for young emerging artists between the ages of 18 and 35, born, resident, studying or working in Italy.

The objectives of the competition are to make known the contemporary artistic trends of the new generations and give young artists the opportunity to represent the theme of each edition of the Biennale in their different creative expressions. At the same time, the initiative seeks to promote the works of young emerging creatives in the individual fields covered by the competition rules, offering them opportunities to develop and promote their work and opening the city’s highly prestigious exhibition venues to them for the occasion.

The sixth edition of Artefici del nostro tempo invited artists to respond to the theme Intelligens. Naturale. Artificiale. Collettiva, the title of the 2025 Architecture Biennale. This year, the artistic categories are organized into five sections: Street Art (graffiti, graphic design and communication in public spaces, urban furniture design); Glass (glass artworks); Image (photography and video in all techniques and materials); Artwork (painting and sculpture in all techniques and materials); Narrative (illustration, visual poetry in all techniques and materials that combine text and images).

The project Artefici del nostro tempo is spread across different places in the city. The works judged to be the best will be exhibited, from 10 May to 23 November, in the Venice Pavilion at the Giardini della Biennale. From 12 June to 31 December in Pavilion 29 at Forte Marghera there will be a collective exhibition of the other creatives selected for each category: among them, the creators of Street Art will have one wall each for their work.

From 1 December to the year’s end, works by the winners will move from the Venice Pavilion to the group show at Forte Marghera, and finally enter the collections of the Municipality of Venice at Ca’ Pesaro – Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna.

The new exhibition project conceived for the Centro Culturale Candiani again stems from the civic collections of modern art at Ca’ Pesaro and another all-important master of the 20th century: Henri Matisse. The exhibition starts from the precious graphic collections of the Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna, which has three important lithographs by the French artist dated to the 1920s and two drawings from his output in 1947.

Works by the Fauve master create a dialogue with artists who were close to him in life and took part in the same artistic revolutions, such as Henri Manguin, André Derain, Albert Marquet, Maurice de Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy and Pierre Bonnard. Expressionist freedom in the use of colours and lines was at the heart of Matisse’s work, as well as of those artists who sought to capture the Mediterranean light in their painting. As Derain wrote in a letter to Vlaminck, they wanted to express a “golden light that suppresses shadows”.

In the exhibition, Matisse forms a sort of thread running through the history of 20th-century art, connecting various artists who worked on the inner qualities of mimetic painting, optical and conceptual at the same time. Light and colour are the fulcrum of the whole exhibition, expressed in the dazzling beauty of the Mediterranean and the arabesque lines of female figures. The importance of drawing, almost an obsession in Matisse, is here flanked by reflections on the decorative art, on ornament, the arabesque line, and at the same time on the “pleasure in drawing” that the philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy writes of.

Distinct research projects and productions, however, create a choral narrative all through the exhibition. They range from the friendship between Derain and Matisse, travelling on the Mediterranean coast of France in the summer of 1905, to the centrality of certain places, such as Nice and Saint-Tropez, the latter becoming an icon of 20th-century art and culture. The background to these events is the Midi, the French South, a fundamental place for the evolution of modern European art. A geography of the soul and artistic creation, the Mediterranean is the protagonist of colour freed by the wild expressionism of the Fauves, the “beasts”, and then enters the study of form that is perhaps the most important artistic and moral legacy left by Matisse to the new generations.

In 2019, on the initiative of the Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro to mark the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, the competition Artefici del nostro tempo (Creators of our time) was founded for young emerging artists between 18 and 35 years old resident, studying or working in Italy.

The objectives of the competition are to disseminate the contemporary artistic trends of the new generations and give young artists the opportunity to represent the theme identified by the Biennale for each edition through various creative expressions.
The initiative also seeks to promote the works of young emerging artists in the individual disciplines indicated in the competition rules, offering them an opportunity to develop and promote their work and opening prestigious exhibition venues in the city for the occasion.

The fifth edition of Artefici del nostro tempo invited artists to respond to the theme Stranieri Ovunque / Foreigners Everywhere, the title of the 2024 Biennale. Mestre Painting Prize 2024

—

Mestre, Centro Culturale Candiani
From 14 September to 20 October, 2024
Third floor exhibition rooms

From 14 September to 20 October 2024, the Centro Culturale Candiani in Mestre hosts the collective exhibition of Premio Mestre di Pittura 2024, organized by Il Circolo Veneto and Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, under the patronage of Regione del Veneto, Città Metropolitana di Venezia and Comune di Venezia, with the collaboration of Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia and Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. The exhibition will display the finalist works, selected by the prize jury.

The Mestre Painting Prize was founded in 1958 by the far-sighted conception of the artist Andreina Crepet Guazzo, who since the early 1950s had hoped for a cultural revival of the mainland, in conjunction with the economic revival underway in those years. After ten successful editions attracting some of the most famous names on the Venetian pictorial scene and beyond, the Prize lapsed in 1968.
It was revived in 2017, after half a century of oblivion, by the energy and passion of members of the Circolo Veneto and since 2018 it has been organised in conjunction with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia as a partner in selecting the works and organising the exhibition and the catalogue.

Bearing testimony to the ties between the Prize and the Musei Civici, and as was the case in its historic editions, again today a work by the winner of the Mestre Painting Prize will be added to the patrimony of the Municipality of Venice in the collections of the Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna at Ca’ Pesaro.

Created in collaboration between the Municipality of Venice and important Venetian cultural institutions such as the Accademia di Belle Arti and the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, and supported by a large group of generous patrons and private sponsors to showcase contemporary pictorial art, the renewed Mestre Painting Prize reaches the eighth edition of its renewed series in 2024. Again on this occasion, the Prize is open to everyone without limits of age, sex, nationality, and can depict any subject.

The jury of the Mestre Painting Prize comprises illustrious art historians and professionals in the cultural sector, as well as the presidents of the jury who have alternated in the various editions: Stefano Zecchi, Philippe Daverio, Gianfranco Maraniello. Since 2021, the Lifetime Achievement Award has honoured an artist who has had a long and distinguished career, not only by their artistic merits, but also their connection with the region. In 2021 Ennio Finzi and in 2022 Giorgio Di Venere; in 2023 Luigi Voltolina; in 2024 the Prize will be awarded to an artist chosen by the organising committee.

Finally, in the numerous initiatives related to the Mestre Painting Prize and its long tradition, since the last edition a path of remembrance has been created for the winning artists of the historic editions, honouring their memory, starting with Ernani Costantini, the winner of the first edition in 1958 and Corrado Balest, winner in 1959.

From 16 September to 15 October 2023, the Centro Culturale Candiani in Mestre hosts the collective exhibition of Premio Mestre di Pittura 2023, organized by Il Circolo Veneto and Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, under the patronage of Regione del Veneto, Città Metropolitana di Venezia and Comune di Venezia, with the collaboration of Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia and Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. The exhibition will display the finalist works, selected by the prize jury.

The Premio Mestre di Pittura was inaugurated in distant 1958, based on the farsighted proposal by artist Andreina Crepet Guazzo, who since the early 1950s had advocated the cultural revival of the mainland in conjunction with the economic revival that took place in those years. After ten successful editions that included some of the most famous names of the day in the Veneto and beyond, the prize was abandoned in 1968. After over half a century of oblivion, it was successfully reinstated in 2017, due to the efforts and enthusiasm of the members of Circolo Veneto, and since 2018 it has been organised in collaboration with Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, a partner in selecting the artworks, organising the exhibition and preparing the catalogue.

The link between the Premio Mestre di Pittura and the Musei Civici has been evident from the earliest editions, in that the prizewinning work enters the Venice Municipal collections at the Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna di Ca’ Pesaro.

The award is the result of collaboration between Venice Municipality and important Venetian cultural institutions, such as the Accademia di Belle Arti and Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa; it also receives support from a large group of generous patrons and private sponsors. The aim is to promote contemporary pictorial art, and the seventh edition of the revived Premio Mestre di Pittura in 2023 is open to all, with no restrictions on age, gender, nationality or subject matter.

The Mestre prize jury is composed of illustrious art historians and professionals from the cultural sector. Previous presidents of the jury have included Stefano Zecchi, Philippe Daverio and Gianfranco Maraniello.

Since 2021, a Lifetime Achievement Award pays tribute each year to an artist who has distinguished themself over the course of their long career, not only in terms of artistic merit, but also based on links established with the region. In 2021 the award went to Ennio Finzi and in 2022 to Giorgio Di Venere. In 2023 the organising committee will select the winning artist.

In addition to the numerous initiatives connected with the Premio Mestre di Pittura and its long tradition, 2022 also saw the inclusion of a memorial route to commemorate past winners, beginning from 1958 with Maestro Ernani Costantini.

The successful exhibition activity conceived by Fondazione Musei Civici for the city of Mestre around the Masters of the 20th Century series, continues. After the theme of abstraction, which began with Kandinsky and ended with the international Art Informel movement, once again a Russian master, namely Marc Chagall, is the focus of a new ‘journey’ through the civic collections of modern and contemporary art. Commencing from the masterpiece Rabbino n. 2 or Rabbino di Vitebsk (1914–1922), acquired by Venice Municipality at the 1928 Biennale and conserved in Ca’ Pesaro Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna, the exhibition will investigate the revolutionary scope of Chagall’s art as dream painting and the triumph of the creative imagination.

At the climax of symbolism and expressionism and the start of surrealist painting, Chagall’s inner world appears as instinctive, illogical, fantastic and otherworldly. Conceived around masterpieces conserved at Ca’ Pesaro, the exhibition includes Chagall in its journey through 20th-century art. This begins from the oneiric symbolism of Odilon Redon, Félicien Rops and Adolfo Wildt and traverses the works of European expressionism, well represented by the colours of Emil Nolde and George Grosz. Matter painting and sacred themes are also considered in relation to the religious implications of the Russian master, expressed by Georges Rouault.

The affinity of the Rabbino in Ca’ Pesaro to cubist and constructivist developments will then be compared with the contemporary sculpture of Ossip Zadkine, and from there to the surrealism of Max Ernst, who saw Chagall as an essential starting point for his own art.

In 2019, during the 58th Venice Biennale, the Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro launched ‘Artefici del nostro tempo’ (Creators of Our Time), a competition for young emerging creatives between the ages of 18 and 35, who were either born, resident, students or workers in Italy.
The goals of the competition are to disseminate the contemporary artistic trends of the new generations and offer young artists from diverse artistic fields the opportunity to use their expressive form to represent the chosen Biennale theme for each edition.

The initiative promotes of the work of these emerging creatives in the specific disciplines selected for the competition, offering them an occasion to develop and present their work in prestigious Venetian exhibition venues. The fourth edition of ‘Artefici del nostro tempo’ has invited artists to respond to the theme ‘The Laboratory of the Future’, the title of the 2023 Architecture Biennale.
The categories confirmed for this year are glass design, photography, painting and street art, as well as the new discipline New Media Art, which sees young artists tackle the techniques of digital illustration, video art and 3D printing.
This edition will also establish a closer link with the Biennale programme by introducing the sections interior design and street furniture design, with a view to providing an even wider vision of contemporary creativity.

The ‘Artefici del nostro tempo’ project will take place in various venues across the city, with the prizewinning work from each category exhibited from 20 May to 26 November at the Padiglione Venezia in the Biennale Giardini.
From 30 June to 31 December, Pavilion 29 at Forte Marghera will hold a group exhibition of the work by the other creatives selected from each category, with the street art artists each allocated a wall for their work.
On 1 December the prizewinning works will be transferred from the Padiglione Venezia to the group exhibition space at Forte Marghera, where they will remain until the end of the
year.
They will then enter the collections of the Venice Municipality at Ca’ Pesaro – Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna.

Point and line to plane

30 September 2022 – 10 April 2023
Centro Culturale Candiani, Mestre

Curated by: Elisabetta Barisoni

_

Autumn at Candiani will be dedicated to Wassily Kandinsky and the European avant-garde movements. From 30 September 2022 to 10 April 2023, the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia is presenting Kandinsky and the avant-gardes. Point and line to plane, curated by Elisabetta Barisoni, at the Candiani Cultural Centre in Mestre. This original MUVE project draws the entire content of the very rich exhibition from its own collections, in particular from the masterpieces of the collections of the Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna di Ca’ Pesaro, an exceptional example of its kind in Italy, especially with regard to the great international artists of the twentieth century.
In the exhibition, alongside Kandinsky, visitors can admire masterpieces by Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, Enrico Prampolini, Jean Arp, Victor Brauner, Joan Mirò, Antoni Tàpies, Yves Tanguy, Luigi Veronesi, Ben Nicholson, Karel Appel, Roberto Matta, Giuseppe Santomaso, Mario Deluigi, Tancredi, Mark Tobey, Emilio Vedova, Mirko Basaldella, Eduardo Chillida. Bruno De Toffoli, Julia Mangold, Luciano Minguzzi and Richard Nonas.

The exhibition makes use of works purchased by the City of Venice at the various editions of the Biennale, together with others donated by the award-winning artists themselves or by patrons and private individuals, bearing witness to a fascination with Venice and a long history of esteem and gratitude that links the Museums to the city and binds together its cultural institutions, collectors, patrons and artists. This history has resulted in Ca’ Pesaro becoming Italy’s central venue for documenting the tumultuous changes in the twentieth-century international art scene, and one where many masterpieces are permanently displayed.

Through more than 40 masterpieces – including paintings, works on paper and sculptures – the exhibition recounts the fascinating journey of abstract art from its birth to the present day.
Point and line to plane is the title of a famous book written by Wassily Kandinsky in 1926, one of the capital texts of modern art theory. The Russian artist’s research laid the foundations for abstract art in the twentieth century and his theories on non-figurative art combine with the continuous correspondences established in the works, between colours, shapes and sounds.

After the first part dedicated to the Birth of abstract art, the exhibition presents – again thanks to the masterpieces in Ca’ Pesaro – The avant-garde movements between abstraction and Surrealism. Following the line traced out by Klee and Kandinsky, we witness the 1920s experiments of Surrealism by Joan Miró, Yves Tanguy, Victor Brauner and Antoni Tàpies, Jean Arp’s abstract sculpture, Enrico Prampolini’s cosmic analogies and Luigi Veronesi’s musical forms.
The third part of the exhibition explores the persistence of Abstract art after the Second World War. In the 1940s, Kandinsky’s innovations were echoed in Britain by Ben Nicholson, in the international scene by Abstract Expressionism and in Italy by the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti and Astrattismo segnico. From Emilio Vedova to Mario Deluigi, from Giuseppe Santomaso to Tancredi, from Roberto Matta to Karel Appel and on to Mark Tobey, the forms of abstraction in the second part of the twentieth century fall somewhere between informal, lyrical and gestural suggestion.
The exhibition closes with Sculpture towards Minimalism, presenting a fine selection of sculpture that completes the itinerary with masterpieces by Mirko Basaldella, Eduardo Chillida, Luciano Minguzzi and Bruno De Toffoli. These testify to the persistence of the dialogue between abstraction and biomorphism in the 1950s. Finally, the resumption of a radical, almost ascetic abstraction makes its way with the minimalist experiences of Richard Nonas and Julia Mangold, who introduce the visitor to the groundbreaking art of the 1970s and to the revival of a new life of abstract art and forms.

Kandinsky and the avant-gardes is an exhibition that does double duty: on the one hand it indicates the desire of the Fondazione MUVE to embark on a new phase in its collaboration with the Centro Culturale Candiani. On the other, it represents the effective testimony of the new network of relations that the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia has created in a broader territorial area, for the exhibition was already presented between December 2021 and May 2022 in a smaller format at the Galleria Comunale d’Arte Contemporanea in Monfalcone.
The exhibition is part of the extensive MUVE Contemporaneo programme that the Fondazione Musei Civici has organised on the occasion of the resumption of exhibition activities and in conjunction with the 59th Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

The founding of the Premio Mestre di Pittura (Mestre Painting Prize) in distant 1958 was the outcome of a farsighted proposal by artist Andreina Crepet Guazzo, who from the early 1950s advocated the cultural revival of the mainland in conjunction with the economic resurgence of those years. After ten successful editions involving some of the most famous names in painting in Venice and beyond, the prize was abandoned in 1968.
After over half a century of oblivion, it was successfully reinstated in 2017, due to the efforts and enthusiasm of the members of the Circolo Veneto cultural association, and since 2018 it has been organised in collaboration with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, which assists in selecting the artworks, organising the exhibition and preparing the catalogue.

The re-established Premio Mestre di Pittura is the result of participation by the Municipality of Venice, important Venetian cultural institutions, and the support of a large group of generous art patrons and private sponsors. In 2020 it will hold its fourth edition and is set to become a regular national event. Almost 900 artists participated from all over Italy and abroad, 54 of whom were selected for the finalists’ exhibition at the Centro Culturale Candiani.

The jury, chaired by professor Philippe Daverio – recently passed away – is made up of experts and professionals spanning the world of art and culture. They include Gabriella Belli, director of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia; Giuseppe La Bruna, director of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia; Michele Bonuomo, editor of Mondadori’s monthly journal Arte; Roberto Zamberlan, director of the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa; Christiano Costantini, President of the “Amici del Premio Mestre” and Marco Dolfin, curator of the exhibition and jury secretary.

As per tradition, the winning work will enter the museum collections of Ca’ Pesaro Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna. In addition, the 2020 winner will also be present in the Venice Pavilion at the Biennale.
