Casermette, Forte Marghera

Casermetta 9

Since December 2025, the renovated spaces of Casermetta 9 in Forte Marghera have been open to the public: it is one of the two twin 19th‑century buildings also known as the Napoleonic Casermette.
Overlooking the bay of Forte Marghera, Casermetta 9 has regained a public and cultural role, contributing to the revival of one of the city’s most significant historic complexes.

The reopening is the result of an extensive conservative restoration, commissioned by the City Administration and entrusted to the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, which has transformed it into a new gathering place and a venue dedicated to contemporary culture, with a particular focus on emerging artists.

In addition to hosting each year the group exhibitions of the artists in residence at the Emeroteca dell’Arte, reopened in 2024, the new space will become the venue for the annual exhibitions of the “Artefici del nostro Tempo” competition.

Exhibition activities

The exhibition and cultural programmes curated by Fondazione MUVE fit perfectly into the Forte Marghera area, where other institutions such as La Biennale are already active, and are aimed at a young audience through innovative approaches. This historic site, restored and returned to the city, an exemplary meeting point between water and mainland, is an ideal venue for contemporary art.

Starting in June 2026, Casermetta 9 will host Creators of our time, the group exhibition featuring artists selected through the competition for emerging young artists aged 18 to 35 who were born in Italy, reside, study, or work there.
The seventh edition of the competition invites artists to interpret and draw inspiration from the curatorial concept of Koyo Kouoh, curator of the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia: In Minor Keys.

Inside Casermetta 9, a café with an outdoor seating area has also been set up, designed to offer a coffee service to all visitors. Open during the same hours as Casermetta 9, the café provides a welcoming and informal space, ideal for taking a break during your visit or stopping by before exploring the activities and events hosted at Forte Marghera.

The outdoor seating area also allows visitors to enjoy the space in the open air, in a setting immersed in greenery.

Exhibitions at Forte Marghera, 2017-2025

Since 2017, with the reopening to the public of the renovated area of Forte Marghera, between Venice and Mestre, in the evocative nineteenth‑century buildings made available by the City of Venice and the Fondazione Forte Marghera, the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia has presented several exhibitions over the years: Gruppo di famiglia, a large installation of twentieth-century sculptures from the International Gallery of Modern Art Ca’ Pesaro; Motocicletta. L’Architettura della velocità, dedicated to one of the most attractive symbols of twentieth-century design; Mare Blu, paying homage to water and waves, with the flowing of video and film images and site-specific installations.

This was also the evocative venue for the winning works of the street art section of the first edition in 2019 and of all the sections from 2021 of the competition for young up and coming artists Artefici del nostro tempo.
